To say key Largo is a diver’s Mecca is an understatement. Nowhere in the United States and perhaps the world, will one see as many dive flags as those lining U.S. 1 through key Largo. Indeed, upon entering this largest of the Florida archipelago known as the Keys, you’d think the national flag was the red and white diver down. What brings the dive shops and those that frequent them are Caribbean-like coral reefs that lie a few miles offshore. Aside from balmy weather and beautiful sunsets, Key largo’s greatest asset is John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park - the first underwater park of its kind in the United States - which is located within the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary. Within this protected, no-take boundary, you find some of the Keys best diving amid beautiful coral reefs and tropical fish.
